...are sorry to hear about Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan.

Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan as a couple of Tenenbaums.

From The New York Times (by way of Clark Perry) comes the news that artist/writer/filmmaker Theresa Duncan killed herself on July 10th. Her boyfriend Jeremy Blake was last seen a week later, removing his clothes and walking into the ocean. His clothes have since been found, apparently with a note referring to Theresa, but he has not. He is presumed dead.

While I was heretofore unfamiliar with Ms. Duncan, Jeremy Blake's innovative video/paintings were first brought to my attention by way of PT Anderson's Punch Drunk Love, where they served as interstitials in the film. I've never been fortunate enough to catch any of his other work in person, but have always been intrigued by what I'd seen and read about, especially his piece on the Winchester Mansion.

It's a truly unfortunate story, and, following closely on the heels of another friend pointing out that Edward Yang, director of Yi Yi (A One and a Two) just lost a battle with cancer, it's a sad day all around.

Ian and I also saw Jeremy Blake first in 2002 on a panel speaking on film and video presentation: the theatre vs. the gallery space. It was in conjunction with a selection of works from the Whitney Biennial at the Santa Monica Art Museum. Shortly after his "video paintings" were used as motifs in the art direction of Punch Drunk Love. He had a lot of energy, humor and charisma. While his work was a little on the trippy side, he was certainly an eloquent person, and it's sad to hear this news.
