...and if Target designed a museum.

Behold BCAM born. I attended the first of the 'community days' at the new (Edythe and Eli) Broad Contemporary Art Museum at LACMA.

Mr. Broad (or his curator) certainly has a thing for a rather limited number of contemporary artists. The installation consisted of the Koons wing, the Warhol area, the Kruger elevator (entitled 'Shafted' and undergoing repair), the Hirst room(s), the Serra floor, and a number of other sections all very much single artist ghettos.

It was nice to see some of Mike Kelley's Day is Done installation after having worked on the post-production of images for his catalog and the Jack Goldstein painting in the adjoining room was another highlight.

The structure itself is a Renzo Piano-designed rectangular block of Getty marble accented by a red stairwell on one side (used only in emergencies), and a mess of red I-beams on the back comprising gangways, stairs and an escalator to the top (intended for use).

A special shout-out to John Baldessari for this awesome collaboration:

I like your observations, which hold to what seems to be going on in a lot of cities, we just get to flip a few for perhaps a Flavin or a Sherrie Levine...
